If you’ve been reading the other reviews on this site, you’d know that I have very little, if any, love for IGT’s slots. I believe the overwhelming majority of them are outdated, flawed and overall just not very interesting, despite their inexplicably massive following. But worst of all, IGT just don’t seem to be putting any effort into their products at all. Their slots are pretty much the equivalent of movies produced by “The Asylum” – pale imitations of whatever’s popular at the time made as cheap as humanly possible. Really, when you look at a slot made by IGT, the question isn’t if it’s good or bad, it’s just how bad it is. With all that in mind, Cleopatra isn’t a terrible slot – I mean, sure, it’s not very good at all, but there’s also nothing inherently wrong with it. If you’re still reading, that means you’re here for two reasons – you’re interested in checking out Cleopatra and are wondering just what’s wrong with it, or you’re curious to know just how bad it is. If it’s the latter reason, I’ll have to disappoint you – it’s not that bad. But if it’s the former, and you want to concern yourself with mediocrity, then keep on reading.

Basic Features

Cleopatra is, just like most of IGT’s slots, completely basic. There’s really nothing to it – no bonus game, no bonus features, no fancy graphics, no interesting license (even if the paytable has the rather hilarious claim that the name “Cleopatra” is a trademark held by IGT, which is only a little more ridiculous than when King attempted to copyright the words “candy” and “saga”), really nothing to hold your interest. Its pays are low, its bets are mediocre, it’s RTP is average… I don’t often say the phrase “this really doesn’t need to exist”, as I believe everything has at least some value to it, but I genuinely don’t see a reason for this slot to exist, except maybe to put a bunch of them in a low-quality Egyptian-themed casino.

The only positive thing I can say about this slot is that its graphics are pretty decent. I mean, don’t get me wrong, in any good slot I’d be rather displeased by them, but here they’re easily the best part about the experience. They’re colourful and childish in that absurdly cheesy slot way. I never really got that – slots are meant for adults, right? No one under 18 is allowed to even come near them, so why do most of them look like they were designed for 3 year old girls? I mean, remember Kitty Glitter, another slot by IGT? What was the deal with that? I’m sorry, I know I’m getting off-track, but that should just tell you exactly how little I have to say about this slot.

Paytable

Not counting any special symbols that only appear during bonus games, “The Avengers” has 12 different symbols – one for each Avenger (including Black Widow, Hawkeye and Nick Fury) as well as three symbols with a K, Q and A letter. Interestingly enough, while some of the symbols are clearly different, they still give you the exact same amount – for example, the letters (K, Q and A) will each give you 12 times your bet and if you get 3 of them in a row and up to 150 times your bet if you get 5. Hawkeye, being the worst Avenger (“The city is flying, we’re fighting an army of robots and I have a bow and arrow”), pays the least, followed by Nick Fury and Black Widow, who’ll give you up to 300 times your bet for 5 of their symbols. Hulk, on the other hand, will give you up to 400 times, Thor and Iron Man – up to 500, and for some strange reason Captain America gives up to 1000 times your stake. I’ll never understand how Captain On Steroids With A Shield can possibly pay more than a Norse God, but whatever.

Just like in most slots there are two special symbols – a Wild and a Scatter. The Wild symbols, represented by SHIELD’s emblem, can substitute for any non-special symbol, so if you’ve got 2 Thors lined up with a SHIELD, you’re getting paid 40 times your stake instead of nothing. In addition, the Wild symbols can also be lined up for huge rewards, with 2 of them giving you 50 times your stake and 5 of them giving you 5000 times your bet. That’s a lot of shawarma! The Scatter symbol, represented by the Avengers logo, is where things get really interesting!

Bonus Rounds/Free Spins

Calling what Cleopatra offers a “bonus game”, or even a “bonus round”, would be a massive, massive overstatement. There is no bonus game – all you get for activating it, which you do by getting at least three Scatter symbols (represented by the Sphinx, because creativity isn’t IGT’s strong suit), is 15 free spins, and that’s it. Admittedly, all winnings are tripled during those 15 free spins, but that still doesn’t excuse the fact that the feature is so basic and lackluster that I’m having a lot of trouble filling out two paragraphs by talking about it. It’s about as barebones as you can possibly get!

The only interesting part about the bonus, aside from, well, the winning itself, is that you can earn additional free spins by getting Scatter symbols during it. As always, every 3 or more Scatters on one payline are going to be raking in 15 more free spins, but you’re limited to only 180 free spins… Then again, “only” isn’t really an accurate word, considering that I’m fairly certain nobody has ever gotten past, say, 30-45 extra free spins in this slot. The winnings, even tripled, are not something to dream about. You could win a whole lot more from another slot’s jackpot than you would even with 60 free spins on Cleopatra.

Experience of Playing the Slot and Other Recommended Games

Please do not play this slot. It’s true that there isn’t anything inherently bad about it, no obvious faults of its own… But at the same time there’s nothing good either, which on its own is the slot’s biggest flaw. There’s no effort here, nothing to make the slot truly stand out. IGT are counting on unsuspecting people who aren’t all that familiar with slots in general to play this one without being aware that there’s a lot better slots out there. Slots like Gonzo’s Quest, Avalon II, Jack Hammer and many, many more. Slots that, while never perfect, are at least trying to do something different, something unique and fun, something that can make even the biggest slot hater go “Hey, y’know what? Slots aren’t my thing, but at least I can see why people like this”. A lot of care went into the creation of those games – for lack of a better word, it was a very creative process that required the expert matching of imagination with mathematics in order to create something that’s both entertaining and viable in a business sense, for both the player and the company. IGT, on the other hand, rarely – if ever – put any effort into their slots. They’re not creative endeavours, they’re just products to be mass-produced and sold off to whoever’s dumb enough to buy them. If the slots of companies are PlayTech and NetEnt are fine art, like the Mona Lisa or The Thinker, IGT’s are those abstractions that depict 2 crossing lines or just a blank screen and sell for millions of dollars. But they don’t have to – an educated, intelligent gambler will be able to tell that the king has no clothes and move on to bigger and better things. So thank you, dear reader, for taking the time to read this review and educate yourself, to seek out other people’s opinions in an attempt to find the very best. If everyone was like you, then maybe IGT would be forced to step up their game.
