Have you ever asked yourself why you play slots at all? Is it maybe because you find their spinning reels relaxing, or perhaps because you enjoy their colourful visuals? For a lot of you, the answer is a lot more simple – it’s because of the money! While poker and blackjack offer seasoned gamblers the chance to become millionaires, slots have always been there to provide the same opportunity to people who can’t bluff or count cards all that well. And while most winnings on slot machines aren’t particularly high unless you get a bonus game or something like that, they’re not why we’re here – no, we came for the reels, but we definitely stayed for the jackpot! The promise of the multi-million-pound jackpot has enticed people for years, and in the online space, there’s really no jackpot that is more famous than the Mega Moolah jackpot. Never dropping below £1,000,000, this progressive jackpot has made several people millionaires already, and for a while, it also held the record for biggest jackpot won from an online slot.
Basic Features
Mega Moolah is one of Microgaming’s most popular slots, in no small part due to the aforementioned gigantic jackpot (which still remains one of the best on the UK market). Its graphics, inspired by the African savannah as depicted in movies like “The Lion King”, are very cute and full of life, even if some of the animals look like they’re in the middle of demonic possession. The RTP is just over 88%, which is pretty low for this kind of slot, but since the emphasis is on winning the jackpot rather than smaller sums, it actually isn’t that big of a deal.

The good news is that Mega Moolah is pretty much tailor-made for people who want to win its jackpot. The bonus round (which is guaranteed to give you one of the 4 jackpots – Mini, Minor, Major and Mega) occurs randomly as you play, so as long as you keep playing sooner or later you’re guaranteed to get at least one jackpot. To accommodate for this, the coin value is actually as low as it can be, with only 1 penny per coin rather than 5 or 10 like other slots. Additionally, the minimal cost of your bet is just 1 coin, meaning that if you don’t care about non-jackpot winnings you can easily just keep betting coin after coin and hoping for the best!
Paytable
While the main focus of the slot is most definitely getting the jackpot, that doesn’t mean that it doesn’t have some pretty solid systems in place. As always, your goal is to line up 3 or more symbols on any of the paylines, with the king of the jungle giving you up to 15,000 times your bet (£150 on a 1-coin per payline bet) if you manage to get 5 of him lined up. Excluding the monkey, there are 5 more animals, each of which gives you some pretty decent returns if you manage to line several of them up. In addition, you also have the letters that show up in a lot of slots – A, K, Q, J and 10, which give you fewer winnings, though the least you can possibly win is twice your bet.
The lion also acts as a Wild symbol, which is able to substitute for any symbol except for the scatter while also doubling your win (for example, if you get 3 giraffe symbols and a lion symbol lined up on one of the paylines you’ll get 250 times your bet). The monkey, which is that ridiculous purple-faced… thing you can see in some of the screenshots, acts as the scatter symbol, and as always, lining at least 3 of them up activates the free spins. In other words, Mega Moolah is the only place where seeing 3 of these abominations coming at you means that you won money rather than that you’re about to become victim #5 in a, particularly disturbing horror movie.
Bonus Rounds/Free Spins
As mentioned earlier, you activate the free spins by lining up three or more creepy, purple-faced monkeys on a single payline (keep in mind that the wild symbols can’t substitute for the monkey), and that’s when the real fun begins! Of course, the monkeys themselves will multiply your bet just for managing to line them up (with 3 times your bet for 3 and 100 times for 5), but in addition, they’ll also give you 15 free spins. As if that wasn’t enough, all winnings you get from the free spins will be multiplied by three. If you manage to get more monkeys during your free spins, then the number of spins you get will be increased by 15 each time.
But you most likely didn’t come here to know about the free spins! No, you’re here to know more about the progressive jackpots you can win! There’s four of them – Mini, Minor, Major and Mega, which start at 10, 100, 10 000 and 1 000 000, respectively and then keep building up the more people play. In order to win them, you need to get yourself into a bonus round where you get to spin a wheel that will randomly get you one of the four jackpots. While entering the bonus round depends entirely on luck, as it happens randomly, if the messages that appear on the bottom of the screen when somebody has won a jackpot are to be believed it happens pretty frequently, so as long as you keep playing it’s bound to happen to you eventually. The real question is whether you’ll get a Mini or a Mega jackpot!
Experience of Playing the Slot and Other Recommended Games
Overall, while there’s plenty to like in Mega Moolah for the people who play slots casually (such as cute graphics and pleasantly catchy music), the slot has been expertly designed to cater specifically to the jackpot hunters. With four different progressive jackpots, 25 paylines and extremely low coin price and minimum bet, you can definitely make the most out of this slot by betting smaller amounts over a large amount of time rather than by spending your entire deposit on a few spins. While the non-jackpot prizes you can win are still pretty high, with very nice free spins scatter bonus, they’re certainly not the focus of Mega Moolah, so if you’re more interested in short-term winnings and minigames rather than in playing the long game and trying to get a jackpot then you should probably try a slot such as South Park оr Gonzo’s Quest. If jackpot hunting is your hobby, you really can’t go wrong with Mega Moolah! Even with the presence of other extremely popular progressive jackpot slots such as Millionaire Genie, Mega Moolah still remains one of the best options on the market! So go out there, play some slots and don’t let the creepy purple monkeys bite!
